Königsbrunn heath

Known as a “botanical treasure trove” Königsbrunn heath (“Königsbrunner Heide” in German) is a safe haven for myriad species of fauna and flora. Rare gentian and glorious orchids grow here alongside purple swamp gladioli that blossom in a magical sea of colour in July. You can discover the rich variety of species on the well-tended foot- and cycle paths through this protected natural paradise. With a little luck, you might even encounter rare birds or get a close-up look at the Przewalski horses.

Following in the footsteps of history

The important Roman road Via Claudia Augusta connects Augsburg with Venice and leads right through Königsbrunn. However, the area around Königsbrunn was settled much earlier. Numerous archaeological sites from the Neolithic period and Celtic burial sites give fascinating insights into the world of our ancestors. 

Lake Ilsesee: a paradise for diving and swimming

It’s so easy to switch off and unwind at Lake Ilsesee. Whether on the large sunbathing lawns or in the refreshing shade of ancient trees, you’ll find the perfect spot to relax in. Families can look forward to the playgrounds, beach volleyball courts, and large lawns for family fun. And on hot days, a dip in the crystal-clear water of the lake is a fantastic way to cool off.
A real highlight: diving in Lake Ilsesee, one of the cleanest, most diverse diving lakes in Bavaria. With a visibility of up to 20 metres and enchanting canyons, it treats you to incredible insights into the underwater world. You’ll encounter pristine nature as you dive up to 15 metres deep into a world of astounding beauty.
The diving station at the lake offers everything you need: equipment, taster sessions, guided dives. For a safe, awe-inspiring experience in Bavaria’s much-loved diving paradise.

Five Lakes area

Between Munich and Augsburg, the enchanting Five Lakes area is waiting for your visit. The two large lakes, Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammersee, frame the three smaller ones, Lake Wörthsee, Lake Pilsensee, and Lake Wesslinger See. The landscape features gentle hills, moors, and forests, while the Pre-Alps beckon on the horizon. Swimming, water sports, fishing, cycling, or hiking: The vast array of activities makes the area the ideal destination for anyone who loves nature and the tranquillity of the great outdoors.

The Fuggerei – a city within the city

The Fuggerei is a unique testament to the history of social housing. It’s been offering people in need a home for an annual base rent of around €0.88 since 1521. With its own church, gates, and walls, it almost appears to be an independent city within Augsburg. Visitors can learn more about its history in the museum, the display residence, and the World War Bunker.

Schaezler Palace – a Rococo gem

UNESCO World Heritage: the waterworks at the Red Gate

The waterworks at the Red Gate, whose construction began in 1416, is the oldest intact waterworks in Germany and one of the key parts of Augsburg’s historical water system, which belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage. It consists of three water towers, two fountain master houses, and an aqueduct. The exhibitions in the large and small water tower let visitors learn more about how water was raised using water-wheel-powered piston pumps. The Swabian Craftsmen Museum also gives fascinating insights into the history of technology and crafts.

“Augsburger Puppenkiste” puppet theatre

The Augsburg puppet theatre has been delighting audiences of all ages with lovingly staged fairy tales and plays since 1948. The puppet theatre museum offers a look behind the scenes, letting you get even closer to the famous marionettes.

Augsburg zoo – a wild experience
